- CALCULATORS & CONVERTERS -

LCL (Less than Container Load) Shipping Cost Calculation:

The shipping cost for LCL is typically based on a unit rate per metric ton (TON) or per cubic meter (CBM). The final charge is determined by whichever is greater between the two calculations.

Cubic Meter (CBM) Calculation Formula: Length (cm) × Width (cm) × Height (cm) ÷ 1,000,000

Example: A package with dimensions of 100cm × 100cm × 100cm has a volume of: 100 × 100 × 100 ÷ 1,000,000 = 1 CBM

Cubic Foot (CUFT) Calculation Formula: CBM × 35.315

Example: A shipment with a volume of 10 CBM would have a volume in cubic feet of: 10 × 35.315 = 353.15 CUFT

Air Freight Cost Calculation

Air freight charges are calculated based on weight. The final cost is determined by whichever is greater: the actual gross weight (G.W.) or the volumetric weight (V.W.) of the shipment.

Air Freight Volumetric Weight (V.W.) Calculation Formula: Length (cm) × Width (cm) × Height (cm) ÷ 6,000

Example: A package with dimensions of 100cm × 100cm × 100cm has a volumetric weight of: 100 × 100 × 100 ÷ 6,000 = 166.67 kg

Courier Cost Calculation

Courier charges are calculated based on weight. The final cost is determined by whichever is greater: the actual gross weight (G.W.) or the volumetric weight (V.W.) of the shipment.

Courier Volumetric Weight (V.W.) Calculation Formula: Length (cm) × Width (cm) × Height (cm) ÷ 5,000

Example: A package with dimensions of 100cm × 100cm × 100cm has a volumetric weight of: 100 × 100 × 100 ÷ 2,000 = 200.00 kg

※Calculation for Shipments from Mainland China

For shipments from mainland China, each individual piece is measured and charged separately, based on the greater of its gross weight (G.W.) or volumetric weight (V.W.).

Example: A shipment consists of 3 pieces.

Total Shipment Details: 3 PCS / G.W. 120 KG / 0.6 CBM = V.W. 120 KG

Individual Piece Weights:

Piece 1: G.W. 40 KG, V.W. 60 KG / Piece 2: G.W. 40 KG, V.W. 20 KG / Piece 3: G.W. 40 KG, V.W. 40 KG

Total Chargeable Weight for the Shipment: 60 + 40 + 40 = 140 KG

Unit Conversion

1 kilogram (kg) = 2.20462262 pounds (lb) ≈ 2.205 pounds (lb)

1 pound (lb) = 0.45359237 kilograms (kg) ≈ 0.454 kilograms (kg)

Conversion Formulas

Kilograms to Pounds: Kilograms (kg) x 2.205 = Pounds (lb)

Example: 100 kg = 100 x 2.205 = 220.50 lb

Pounds to Kilograms: Pounds (lb) x 0.454 = Kilograms (kg)

Example: 100 lb = 100 x 0.454 = 45.40 kg

Unit Conversions

1 foot (ft) = 30.48 centimeters (cm) = 12 inches (in)

1 inch (in) = 2.54 centimeters (cm) = 1/12 foot (ft)

1 centimeter (cm) ≈ 0.394 inches (in) ≈ 0.033 feet (ft)

Conversion Formulas

Centimeters to Feet: cm / 30.48 = ft

Example: 100 cm = 100 / 30.48 ≈ 3.28 ft

Centimeters to Inches: cm / 2.54 = in

Example: 100 cm = 100 / 2.54 ≈ 39.37 in

Centimeters to Feet and Inches: cm / 30.48 → The whole number is the feet. The decimal part multiplied by 12 is the inches.

Example: 100 cm = 100 / 30.48 ≈ 3.28 → The whole number, 3, is the feet. The decimal, 0.28, is multiplied by 12 (0.28 x 12 = 3.36), which is the inches.

Result: 100 cm ≈ 3 ft 3.36 in

- VOLUME & VOLUMETRIC WEIGHT -

What is Volumetric Weight (Dimensional Weight)?

Volumetric weight, also known as dimensional weight. It measures the size of a shipment, with common units being cubic meters (CBM) and cubic feet (CUFT).

To give the customers the best shipping price and plan the best way to transport the goods, we need to know both the weight and the volume. This helps us ensure we’re using cargo space as efficiently as possible.

Let’s look at two extreme examples:

Case 1: High Volume, Low Weight (The Giant Box of Feathers)

Consider a shipment weighing 1,000 kg but with a volume of 60 CBM.

While its weight is only about 1/25th of a 40’GP container’s maximum weight capacity, its large size nearly fills the entire container, leaving little to no space for other goods.

If we were to charge based on weight alone, the forwarder would not be able to cover the cost of the container. Therefore, we must charge based on volume for this shipment.

Case 2: Low Volume, High Weight (The Small Box of Bricks)

Consider a shipment with a volume of 1 CBM but weighing 25,000 kg.

While its volume is only about 1/65th of a 40’GP container’s volume capacity—but its heavy weight is close to the container’s maximum load limit, making it impossible to add other cargo.

If we were to charge based on volume alone, the forwarder would not be able to cover the cost of the container. Therefore, we must charge based on weight for this shipment.

Chargeable weight is a calculation that compares the shipment’s actual weight to its volumetric weight. The shipping cost is based on the greater of the two. This method ensures that the pricing reflects a shipment’s true impact on the carrier’s space and weight capacity, as it also accounts for the cargo’s density.

Why do we need to know the volume?

To give the customers the best shipping price and plan the best way to transport the goods, we need to know both the weight and the volume. This helps us ensure we’re using cargo space as efficiently as possible.

Why can’t we use a single standard for charging?

Let’s look at two extreme examples:
